Sydney Boot Camp Instructor Shares 10 Travel Tips You Must Know Before Going on Vacation (part 1)
As someone who likes to travel a lot I always find it the most difficult to stay on track while I’m away from home. Sure the first week or two is easy because I’m still in my usual routine, but by week 3,4,5 and 6 it’s easy to let bad habits slip in. And as a Sydney boot camp instructor I see first hand how many of my clients struggle with the same problem.
I remember when I first came to Sydney 9 years ago I worked out everyday for the first two weeks. But after traveling around the Northern territory and Queensland for 3 months my workouts became few and far between. By the time I got to Sydney I’d packed on at least 7 kilo’s and had to work hard to get back into shape.
With all the traveling I’ve done I now have a much better understanding of what it takes to keep in shape whilst you’re away. So today I’m going to share with you my best 10 travel tips to keep your waistline lean whilst on vacation.
1. Make exercise part of your routine.
Lets be honest, when your’e on holiday time is no excuse for not working out. You probably have much more time than you do when you’re at home – the trick is to make it part of your daily routine.
Crank out a quick 20 minute workout first thing in the morning and it will set you up for the rest of day, you’ll have more energy and will be much less likely to be tempted by calorie heavy foods and drinks that will pack on the kilo’s.
2. Use bodyweight training wherever you go.
Not having a gym in your hotel is no excuse for not training. All you need is your own bodyweight to do the job. I always take my Olympic rings with me on vacation, all I need is a tree branch I can throw the straps over and voila I’m good to go.
3. Make your workouts fun.
Mixing up your workouts to keep your training fresh and to keep you motivated. Try to find a fellow traveler to be your training partner. 2 years ago while on Thailand’s Phi Phi Island I arranged a small boot camp with half a dozen travelers that were staying in our bungalow complex. We were lifting chopped coconut tress, doing chin ups off the Olympic rings and lifting big rocks from the headlands, the locals thought we were nut’s but we had awesome fun and it was a great workout.
4. Take an emergency supply of healthy snacks.
It’s always tough to eat healthy out on the road, if you haven’t planned ahead sometimes you just have to succumb to whatever food you can get at the time. Your best bet is to take some healthy snacks with you. Here are a few of my favourite choices….
Mixed raw nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, walnuts, etc.)
Protein Powder and/or Amino Acids
Tinned tuna
Fruit and Raw Veggies
5. Keep alcohol and empty liquid calories to a minimum.
This is where I and most other people struggle the most, personally I couldn’t care a less about soft drinks as I haven’t drank them for years – but an ice cold beer at sunset on the beach is a different story.
The trouble is alcohol is really bad for your waistline, it not only stops fat burning in its tracks, but it actually promotes fat storage. Alcohol also lowers inhibitions and opens the door to host of junk food cravings that will further set you back.
If you can’t eliminate alcohol while your away at least keep it down to 1-2 drinks per day.

Till then – train hard!
