Boot Camp Workout Of The Week - Bondi Beach Boxing Class
Boot camp kicked off last Saturday in an early morning stint on Sydney's Bondi beach. 7am and the sun was already burning up the sky above the world's most famous stretch of sand.
We were there with a group of 14 willing recruits – both young and not so old - for the boxing workout.
I know in most people's minds boxing is little more than blood sweat and tears.
But the training in the last couple of years has gone mainstream. It's a recognition of the stunning fitness levels – particularly the mix of cardio and strength – achieved by boxers.
I just want to stress these classes are not about teaching people how to deliver a left hook.
Our classes use various boxing drills to lift your heart rate, increase your stamina, improve your co-ordination and tone your body.
It's all about raising your metabolism which helps to burn off the excess fat.
There are also the body strengthening exercises which develop your core strength – in the same way as say yoga or Pilates.
Boxing training - at least the way we do it - gives you a break from the gym, pounding out endless Ks on the treadmill or going through motions on the stationary bike.
At Bondi Beach you have the sand between your toes.
And the most important thing is that the classes are fun, mostly because there is a bunch of people beside you pushing you along.
Its a great motivator and puts a smile on your face at a time when most people are still trying to crawl out of bed.

Boxing classes are great especially if you have a knee injury and you need to raise your metabolism. The trick with exercise is to find the right one to fit your lifestyle and your body strengths and weaknesses, and for you to be aware of them. There is no one formula that is going to be a blanket one for all to use. We all come from different backgrounds and have different physical makeups that call for different dietary needs. We have to strike the balance. Unfortunately today's society is always trying to impose on us unilateral solutions …
